Dear Parents, The purpose of this program is to foster the habit of independent reading and to encourage the reading of good literature. It also allows a student to proceed at his or her own level and pace. The student chooses a book from the list and when he/she has finished the book, takes a test on the computer in the library and earns points for answering correctly. Points are assigned based on the reading level of the book and age of the child. This is an optional program for your child. Participation is not required. The titles of the books can be found on the school’s website (www.stambroseschool.org). The list is found under “Programs”. The book title, author, reading level, and point value is shown for each book. Some of these books may not be found in the school library. It may be necessary to go to the Public Library to check them out. You will find a wide variety of literature and a wide range of reading levels. The program is designed to be a cooperative activity between students and their parents. Since you know your child best, we ask that you assign a point goal that you think your child can reach by the end of the school year. If the goal is reached, you will determine the reward for your child outside of school. Volunteer parents will be manning the computer stations for testing during your child's library period. When your student has read a book from the list, please send a note to his or her teacher, indicating the title of the book, and the teacher will see that he or she takes the test on the computer during library period. A library volunteer will read the tests with the kindergarten and first graders if they need help. Cumulative tally sheets will be provided by the computer program and sent home. Come on board and encourage your child to read, read, read. This is an excellent way to help them feel successful with their reading! Sincerely in Christ,
